Learning is the one path we are ALL on -whether we like it or not.

Causes of Drifting (incomplete)

Drifting leads to leaving

1. You don't know what a specific word in your text means. This immediately causes drifting (not being 'with it').

Fix:

a. Find the word you don't know the meaning of.

b. Look it up in a good dictionary. Figure out which definition fits.

c. Create sentences using the word until you own it. Refer back to the definitions as often as needed.

d. To be thorough, do the same with the other definitions.

e. Return to subject

2. Wrong meaning/misunderstood - occurs same as above except you think you know what the word means but you're using a different meaning than the authors.

Fix:

a. Same except find/figure out what definition the author meant (it’s work)

b. If you can't tell which word you don't have the right meaning for you find it by finding the spot in the materials where you were with it and the spot where you weren't.  Keep narrowing the space between.  The misunderstood word will be right at the end of where you were with it. Look it up, read all the definitions, figure out which one the author meant. Create sentences with it until you own the definition. Return to subject.

3. Don’t have hands on experience. For example, what is a “fluid drive train”?

Fix: Get examples, pictures, see one, handle it, take a “field trip.”

This looks like misunderstood words and it can be. But its also something more.

Its a good example of misunderstood words and how they lead to a drift. -- "Sure. fluid is a liquid! like in a glass. (one pictures a glass of water). and 'drive'? sure! drive is what I do when I go to work - I drive a car. Its an action. And, Train? sure. A train is a train! you know - on tracks!.

So. We now have a picture in our mind of a glass of water somehow driving a train.  Thats a picture in our heads. And it doesn't fit what the author means. And we're going to be out of here real soon because we drifted and didn't even know it. - because of several misunderstood words.

Now.  even if we have the right definition, (fluid drive train: a series of mechanisms (train) that transfer power (drive) through fluids), if we don't HAVE one in front of us, opened up and showing how it works, then we are to that degree, SEPARATED from the full understanding the author assumed we knew. And because of that we are running an increasing risk of missing his immediate point and the following points which rely on it.

4. Zen. Flows only go in one direction then need a break (reverse) (attention span)

5. Too much all at once

6. Reach and withdraw

There is no defense against persistent good feeling toward, and acceptance of others.

There is a set number of mistakes, and we all make them sooner or later.
